The banana shape produces unique darting action on the surface and a wobbling swimming action on steady retrieve. A sharp upward twitch will cause the lure to "pop." A slow pull will dive the lure under water with very little forward movement, causing the bait to rise to the surface just inches ahead of its former position. Jim Pfeffer made this a Florida classic. My version works as a lively surface darter with a wobble action on steady retrieve.

Open Mouth Shiner

This bait is based on the Creek Chub Open Mouth Shiner, made from 1918 to 1931, and a predecessor to the famous 2000 series Darter. I started making this lure to round out my offering of darters. I redesigned my Open Mouth Shiner to be a good darter but also an excellent swimmer. I make the larger version with wire-thru construction for use on the flats and inlets.
